Happiness is not defined by how many friends you have, how many digits are in your back account, or how organized your future is. A crucial ingredient in the nourishing recipe for happiness is being excited.
It is being excited for your iced dirty chai in the mornings. It is being excited about watching a classic movie on a lazy Sunday. It is looking forward to Thursday because you are planning to wear the new sweatshirt that you love. It is being excited for your afternoon walk because you found a new song that you cannot wait to listen to on repeat for 30 minutes. It is being excited for a big squeeze and kiss on the head on Thursday night.
At the ripe prime of the early twenties, I can gladly say I am still excited by most things. Going on a drive after class can make an entire afternoon. A long conversation at the kitchen table fills my cup. A half day of classes is a whole treat. With age, we tend to lose a bit of this fever of liveliness and excitement. To combat this loss of youthful joy and anticipation, its is important to learn how to develop the skill of being excited again.
You will be the happiest version of yourself when you start enjoying the progress of your destination instead of just the destination itself. Happiness is not about getting from point A to point B or about having everything come to you right away. you will be the happiest person when you come to terms with the fact that it is about the process of learning, loving, feeling. Base your happiness on the present moment instead of tentative conditions. The present is a gift. True excitement is achieved when you live in the present period and allow the future to come when it may.
Emphasized by my excerpt, Little Things That Aren’t So Little, I have surrounded myself by individuals who never fail to remind me about the small joys over the last few months. The best way to maintain youthful joy and excitement is to practice gratitude. Acknowledge, appreciate and savor the people, places and moments that rekindle your excitement for life.
In addition to long term dreams, set ambitious yet attainable goals for yourself along the way. Throughout the process, keep track of who lights your flame and what keeps you motivated. Who is the first person you call to share the good news when you are one step closer? Hug those people tight and keep them in your life. Stay close to the people who celebrate your wins, encourage you when you are down, and root you in times of uncertainty. Relationships are precious. Be mindful of the company you keep and the company that keeps you.
As cliche as it sounds, affirmations are crucial to self-awareness and happiness. My mental and physical health turned upside down when I started practicing morning affirmations. I challenge you to practice gratitude with personal affirmations. Remind yourself of your worth to fuel your firing passion for life.
1. I am healthy
2. I am full with love
3. I have all I need to make today a great day
4. I love the person I am becoming
5. I am grateful for another day to make a positive contribution
The real glow up in life is when you stop waiting to transform into some unattainably perfect entity and consciously choose to enjoy being your authentic self.
Watching a movie and rating it 100% on rotten tomatoes, waking up early and enjoying a coffee at home, warm showers, a new workout, and Trader Joe’s chili lime rolled corn tortilla chips existing. Let the little things excite you. Live for the joys and happiness in the small gestures and allow them to motivate your larger term goals.
Do not lose that drive and steam for life. Crave the youthful excitement/
You can still have a long conversation that can change your whole perspective on life in a remarkable way, you could take a wrong turn and end up finding your favorite place, you still have met all the people that will cherish and adore you. Keep these things in mind and practice appreciation when the the situations fall in your part.
Most importantly, acknowledge the people who excite you and scatter your life with moments that bring you the flare of youthful joy.
Life is so sacred. be excited for what is to come.
Much love,
Shaudeh Farjami
